Strength Training Basics: Where to Start

If you have been searching for strength training basics in Avon Lake, you are in the right spot. Most people who come to me are not sure where to begin. They have seen the barbells, the kettlebells and the racks, and they do not know what any of it is for. That is normal, and it is easy to fix.

I was a Navy rescue swimmer, and I have coached here in Avon Lake since 2020. I can tell you the basics are not complicated. They are just easy to skip when you are trying to do too much too soon.

What strength training actually is

Strength training means asking your muscles to work against resistance, then giving them time to recover and adapt. The resistance can be a barbell, a dumbbell, a kettlebell, a band or your own body weight. The tool matters less than the habit of doing it with good form and showing up again next week.

You do not need to want to look like a bodybuilder. Strength helps you carry groceries, climb stairs, shovel a lake effect driveway and play with your kids or grandkids. I wrote more about why in Lifting Weights Is for Everyone.

The 5 movements to learn first

Almost every good program is built on a few basic patterns. Learn these and you have a foundation for life.

1. Squat. Sit down and stand up with control. Chest tall, feet planted, knees tracking over your toes.

2. Hinge. Push your hips back and keep your back flat, like a deadlift or a kettlebell swing. This is the pattern that protects your back when you pick things up.

3. Push. A push-up or a press overhead. Keep your core tight and your ribs down.

4. Pull. A row or a pull-up variation. Most of us sit all day, so pulling work balances out the shoulders.

5. Carry. Pick up something heavy and walk with it. It sounds too simple, and it works.

Start light. Own the movement first, then add weight. Ego is the fastest way to get hurt, and I have a whole mindset around that in Death to the Ego.

How often should you train?

For most beginners, two or three strength sessions a week is plenty. Give yourself a day between hard sessions so your body can recover. Add easy walking on the other days if you like. Some soreness for a day or two is normal. Sharp pain is not, so stop if something hurts.

Be patient with yourself. The first few weeks are mostly about learning the movements and building the habit. Strength shows up after that, usually sooner than you expect.

Why a coach makes the basics easier

You can learn this alone, but it is slower and it is harder to know if your form is off. A coach watches you move, fixes small things before they become habits, and scales each exercise to your body. That is why I keep my classes coach-led. Whether you are 25 or 65, from Avon Lake, Westlake or Bay Village, we can meet you where you are.

If your wrists or shoulders feel tight in the rack position, grab my free Front Rack Mobility guide. It takes about 10 minutes and helps a lot.

At Erie Shore Athletics we offer group training, semi-private and personal training, nutrition coaching, kids classes and drop-ins. You can see what we offer on the programs page.

If you have any health concerns, injuries or take medication, check with your doctor before starting a new program.
