Meal Prep: A Simple Weekly Plan That Sticks

It is Sunday, and the week is about to start. If you want meal prep in Avon Lake to actually work for you, this is the best hour you can spend. Most people do not fall off track because they lack willpower. They fall off because it is 6 p.m., they are tired, and there is nothing ready to eat.

I have coached in Avon Lake since 2020. I spent my Navy years as a rescue swimmer. One lesson stuck with me: when the basics are ready, good choices get easy. Here is the plan I give people who say they do not have time.

Why meal prep works for busy people

Meal prep is not about fancy containers or eating the same chicken for seven days. It is about removing decisions. When you have a few simple things cooked and waiting, you do not have to think at the end of a long day. You just assemble and eat.

It also saves money and keeps you away from the drive-thru on the way home from work in Westlake or North Ridgeville. And it makes your training better. You cannot out-work a rough week of food, but you can make the week a whole lot easier on yourself.

Start small: prep 3 meals, not 21

This is where most people fail. They try to prep every meal for the whole week, burn out by Wednesday, and quit. Do not do that. Start with three meals. Pick the ones that cause you the most trouble. For most folks that is weekday lunch or the post-work dinner.

Once three meals feel easy, add more. Small wins stack up.

My simple Sunday framework

Set a timer for about an hour. Cook one item from each of these groups:

1. Protein. Chicken thighs, ground turkey, eggs, a pot of chili, or a big pan of lean beef. Protein keeps you full and helps you recover after training. If you want more on that, read my post on protein shakes.

2. Vegetables. Roast a big tray of whatever looks good. Squash, mushrooms, broccoli, peppers. Cook some greens in a pan. Color on the plate is an easy rule.

3. Smart carbs. Rice, potatoes, sweet potatoes, oats. Carbs are fuel, not the enemy, especially if you train hard. I wrote about that in Food is Fuel.

4. A sauce or topping. Salsa, a simple dressing, or some seasoning. This is what keeps meal three from tasting like meal one.

Then mix and match through the week. A bowl on Monday, a wrap on Tuesday, a skillet on Wednesday. Same food, different meals.

Tips to make it stick

  • Prep two proteins. Variety keeps you from getting bored.
  • Keep it simple. Salt, pepper, olive oil and a good pan will take you far.
  • Drink water. Keep a bottle with you all day and sip often.
  • Plan for the lake-effect days. When the weather turns gray and cold, having soup or chili ready beats ordering out.
  • Be flexible. If you miss a Sunday, prep on Monday night. Do not wait for a perfect start.

If you want a head start, my free Beginner Fuel Guide walks through what to eat before and after you train. For a bigger picture on simple eating, take a look at Simplifying a Balanced Nutrition Plan.

Everyone's body, schedule and needs are different. If you have a medical condition, take medication, or have questions about what is right for you, check with your doctor or a registered dietitian first.

Food and training work best together

Eating well is only half of it. The other half is showing up, getting stronger and having people in your corner. Erie Shore Athletics is a coach-led gym at 753 D-E Avon Belden Rd in Avon Lake. We offer group training, semi-private and personal training, nutrition coaching, kids classes and drop-ins. Members come from Avon Lake, Westlake, Bay Village, Sheffield Lake and across Lorain County.

If food is the piece you keep struggling with, ask us about nutrition coaching. We will meet you where you are and build from there.

This week, pick three meals and prep them. That is all. Book a free consult and let's talk about your goals.
